MCAA FASTEST TROWEL & SKILLS CHALLENGE WINNERS SHINE IN VEGAS!
Hosting its annual convention at the 2020 World of Concrete, the MCAA also held its Fastest Trowel on the Block journeymen masons and its Masonry Skills Challenge for masonry apprentices. The competitions are known for attracting the industry’s best collection of high-speed, skilled block layers as well as America’s most promising young masons that will lead the next generation of masonry craftsmen.
Historically speaking, the Fastest Trowel on the Block competition field is loaded with competitors from Arizona, a state where CMU buildings are vast and its masons have a history of winning. This year’s contest was no different; all trophies, titles and cash prizes went to the Grand Canyon State.
Below are the 2020 Fastest Trowel on the Block winners:
FIRST PLACE ($8,000)
Gerardo Patlan, Adams Fence LLC, Phoenix AZ
SECOND PLACE ($2,500)
Noe Martinez, Curran Masonry Corporation, Chandler AZ
THIRD PLACE ($1,500)
Roberto Cimental, Arizona State Masonry, Phoenix AZ
For the apprentices competing in the MCAA Masonry Skills Challenge, the contest is arguably the most exciting day of their blooming career and a special day for their instructors. The competition is divided by masonry apprentices in their first, second and third year level of skills training. Each division is given a project to build that corresponds with their know-how. However, all contestants must build their project without ever having seen the drawings, nor can they consult with any advisors during the event.
Below are the first-place winners of the 2020 MCAA Masonry Skills Challenge:
FIRST YEAR, FIRST PLACE
Wade Taylor, Huntley Brothers Company Inc., Mint Hill NC
SECOND YEAR, FIRST PLACE
Deyver Tena, G&G Enterprises of Arizona Masonry Contractors Association, Glendale AZ
THIRD YEAR, FIRST PLACE

On behalf of the SPEC MIX Team and the masonry industry, we congratulate all the MCAA competition winners and commend all the contestants for the commitment to KEEPING THE TRADE STRONG!
