MASONRY LIVING AND ULTIMATE DEMO ZONE
EVENTS DEBUT AT MASONRY MADNESS® DAY

What makes MASONRY MADNESS Day so popular with World of Concrete attendees? It’s the non-stop action and entertainment of its four competitions and all the interactive masonry demonstrations and exhibits that fill the arena. The 2020 MASONRY MADNESS Day was no exception! Once inside this masonry mecca, the landscape is flooded with skilled craftsmen laying bricks, blocks and stone with none other than SPEC MIX mortar.

This year thousands of spectators were treated to two new MASONRY MADNESS events, Masonry Living—Beyond the Wall and the Ultimate Demo Zone. Masonry Living was designed to give attendees the ability to engage and interact with the masons and designers whose vision and craftsmanship took the project from concept to construction phases. People saw masonry construction in action compared to static displays, and they were able to pose questions to the masons discussing various installation techniques while the craftsmen were actually doing the work. Many aspects of the projects included very unusual applications of masonry showing its flexibility in real-life residential settings.

The design-build team from the Arizona Masonry Council, led by past AZMCA Chairman, Mike Sutter, along with architect Mike Anglin of Line and Space, LLC, the group designed and built an amazing masonry backyard tavern scene using four different sizes and shapes of CMU that totaled 650 units.

Other teams participating in Masonry Living were the International Masonry Institute, who featured a “Women in Masonry” theme utilizing female masons. Nearby the Cast Stone Institute partnered with the 12 senior students from Williamson College of the Trades and instructor Pete Zwolak to build a masonry entrance gate from brick, block and of course, cast stone. The team at Natural Stone Veneers International (NSVI) constructed a natural thin stone backyard fireplace and cocktail bar along with an above ground fire pit made with Keystone pavers and free-standing retaining wall units.
The Ultimate Demo Zone (UDZ) was another big hit with WOC attendees. In this section of the Masonry Madness Arena was established for product and equipment manufacturers to show live demonstrations highlighting the extraordinary performance and capabilities of their jobsite goods. Some of the manufacturers and products featured were SPEC MIX Thin Veneer Adhesion Mortar, Diedrich Technologies’ Anti-Graffiti System and iQ Power Tools complete line of dust-free saw systems.
