The SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 Returns to the 2012 World of Concrete / World of Masonry! Celebrating its 10th anniversary on Wednesday, January 25th, 2012 at the World of Concrete / World of Masonry, the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 National bricklaying championship decides, “Who is the World’s Best Bricklayer?” The SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 National is 60-minutes of bricklaying that will challenge some of the best bricklayers in the world, with competitors traveling from all over the U.S. in addition to Canada, Great Britain and Australia to test their level of skill, speed and stamina. The competition has the largest winners’ purse of any masonry competition in the history of the trade and attracts the industry’s best. Twenty-one of world’s best 2-person teams will compete to lay the most brick while meeting strictly defined quality standards, but only one will be crowned “World’s Best Bricklayer” and win a new FORD F-250 4x4 truck loaded with options, a $5,000 paycheck and several thousand dollars in prizes. That’s not all; the event also awards the “TOP CRAFTSMAN” winner with $5,000 and an Essick EM-120S 12 cubic foot mortar mixer by Multiquip. Second and third place winners receive $4,000 and $3,000. All four of these winners are also awarded STIHL Cutquik® cut-off machine and blade packages, Marshalltown tool bags stuffed with tools and engraved trowels, a 10-pack of Gatorback mortarboards, tool packages from Bosch, plus Johnson Level gives each custom, plate engraved wood levels. With over $100,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs, The SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 is recognized as the greatest masonry competition in the world. As many as 3,000 cheering spectators and 7,000 live web broadcast viewers plug into www.specmixbricklayer500.com to witness the world’s best bricklayers give the audience an unbelievable show by laying as many as 900 or more brick in one hour—there’s nothing like this event! Truly an ironman style competition that separates the men from the boys, the SPEC MIX TOUGHEST TENDER is the preliminary event held in the same arena as the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 contest. In this event the tenders race the clock to set up a predefined work area for the mason while following strict instructions to ensure accuracy. Imagine the physical stamina required for one person to lift and stack 1,100 brick at 3.5 pounds each, plus 57 8-inch CMU weighing over 30 pounds each, and four 16 foot plank, as well as other tools for a grand total of nearly 6,000 pounds. This contest tests the endurance of a human being while paying the winning mason tender $2,500 in cold hard cash, along with an array of sponsor prizes from STIHL, Marshalltown Tool Co., GATORBACK, Johnson Level & Tool, and Bosch. Although the typical time to complete the contest is 20 minutes, the record winning time in this event was set in 2005 by Felipe Reyes of Connecticut with a time of 11 min. 7 sec.; a feat many masonry trade enthusiasts find utterly amazing.
The Fastest Trowel on the Block Competition, hosted by the Mason Contractors Association of America, is a showcase of industry craftsmanship and a testament of both the speed and skill of our industry's workforce. Only those journeymen masons , accompanied by their two favorite tenders, who have the skill, confidence and courage to face-off with the industry's best are invited to compete. The masons go head to head in a show of both speed and craftsmanship.
