The 2010 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500® National Bricklaying Championship Competitors Finalized LAS VEGAS, NV - The final selection of competitors for the 2010 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500® (SMBL500) National bricklaying championship is final. Arguably considered the "Best of the Best," this year's competition is made up of winners and qualifiers from 13 regional SMBL500 events spanning from May to October of 2009 that were held in the US & Canada. Now truly an international contest, bricklayers and their tenders come from states such as Ohio, California, Washington, Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa, Utah, Kentucky, Colorado, Illinois, Texas, and North Carolina, as well as the Canadian provinces of Alberta, and Ontario. Included in the following list of the 2010 SMBL500 competitors is the 2009 champion, Tyke Mangum, who is invited to return to Las Vegas and defend his title as "World's Best Bricklayer."
To reinforce the primary goal for the SMBL500, the event host, SPEC MIX, Inc., will introduce a new theme entitled "Keeping the Trade Strong" at the 2010 National competition. General Manager/V.P. Brian Carney of SPEC MIX comments, "The Bricklayer 500 is as much a masonry competition as it is a vehicle to promote the masonry trade. By displaying the remarkable skills of numerous masons worldwide and highlighting the industry's most innovative equipment and products by way of one big, exciting 'masonry party', this event undoubtedly motivates aspiring bricklayers in training as well as experienced masons-everyone involved is proud of its success." The SMBL500 unites numerous corporate sponsors including Hanley Wood Business Media which all share the same objective; building the industry's work force. The 8th annual SMBL500 event will be held on Wednesday, 1:30 PM CST, February 3, 2010 in the Masonry Construction's Challenge arena located in the Gold Lot of the Las Vegas Convention Center during the 2010 World of Concrete / World of Masonry trade show. The day's events are kicked off with the fast and furious SPEC MIX TOUGHEST TENDER® contest that challenges the 20 mason tenders to set up the bricklaying station as quickly and accurately as possible to meet the specifications outlined. With $2,500 of cold cash on the line, this contest is truly an incredible test of human endurance and skill. Considering the SPEC MIX TOUGHEST TENDER and SMBL500 are the main live event at the WOC exhibition, this showcase is the largest annual construction trade show in the world. The 2010 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 National is a bricklaying competition comprised of the best bricklayers, qualifying through thirteen different regional contests held across North America, to decide, "Who is the World's Best Bricklayer?" Twenty, 2-man teams made up of a mason and mason tender compete to lay the most bricks while meeting strictly defined quality standards. Teams have 60 minutes to complete their 26-foot, double wythe brick wall while 20 judges evaluate their workmanship. The competition has four separate awards: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place are based on the highest net brick count. Judges add up the brick laid and subtract from the count if there are quality violations. The 4th award, the SPEC MIX TOP CRAFTSMAN® is for the most sellable (best constructed) wall with over 500 brick installed. This award is the second most coveted award at the event, and has the second highest award purse.
Not only does the event attract as many as 4,000 spectators, the competition has the largest winner's purse of any masonry competition. The bricklayers compete for over $100,000 in cash and prizes including a 2010 FORD F-250 4x4 XLT Super Duty Crew Cab truck with FORD's innovative "Work Solutions" in-dash computer system.
