Garrett Hood is 2-time champion of the 2010 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500®

LAS VEGAS, NV—The 2010 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500® National bricklaying championship decides, “Who is the World’s Best Bricklayer?” For 25-year old mason Garrett Hood from North Carolina, the bright lights of Las Vegas and the intensity of competing for the world bricklaying title is no big deal. For the second time in just three national competitions, Hood took first place overall with 911 brick laid after a 100 brick deduction.  This 60-minute competition was held on Wednesday, February 3rd at the Masonry Construction’s Challenge Arena, at the 2010 World of Concrete / World of Masonry trade show. This is the largest annual construction trade show in the world and the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 is the exposition’s single greatest attraction drawing an estimated 3,000 or more spectators every year. The event is so popular, the World of Concrete - Daily News featured a cover article entitled “Top 10 Things to Do and See at the WOC” with the SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500 ranked #1....Read More

KEEPING THE TRADE STRONG and VISION 20/20—IT TAKES A VILLAGE

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, MN— SPEC MIX, Inc. has a strong record of committment to supporting the industry trade. In these challenging times it is important that we do not lose our vision and we continue to support the masonry trade to maintain the quality of our product. This means training, education and the strategic promotion of the masonry trade to the public. SPEC MIX wishes to announce our support of two industry initiatives, KEEPING THE TRADE STRONG and VISION 20/20.

The best way to win a tug-o-war contest is when every person on a team pulls their hardest at the same time, not just when it suits them. When it comes to promoting the great trade of masonry, the same principle applies. For this to happen, it seems obvious that the members of the masonry construction industry; producers, distributors, mason contractors, training/education programs and all related associations, need to unite and ultimately embrace a clearly defined objective that is immediately supported by a comprehensive strategy. It’s a big task—a project that is certainly achievable and loaded with rewards. But it only pays dividends when ALL share holders contribute. Sometimes the toughest part of any job is simply getting started, and to do this we need a vision....Read More

New Preblended Mortar Specification (C1714) Approved by ASTM C12 Committee

Clarification and consistency in mortar specifications are the key points as ASTM approved the new ASTM C 1714 Standard Specification for Preblended Dry Mortar Mix for Unit Masonry.  The new standard seeks to work off of ASTM C270, the longstanding and traditional mortar specification, however, it solely addresses mortar that is preblended dry in a factory, such as SPEC MIX. Preblended mortar can be best described as a mix of dry aggregate (sand), cement with or without lime that is mixed dry in a factory and shipped to the jobsite where the contractor adds only water in the mixer to produce a masonry mortar....Read More
